Composite materials are widely used in the aerospace industry, especially due to their high strength-to-weight ratios. The epoxy resins are one of the most common thermosets used as matrix materials in advanced composites. The composites are usually used for structural parts of the fuselage, but are also a potential material for hydrogen storage structures. Challenging is the in service temperature of storing liquid hydrogen at -250°C. To improve efficiency of composites for cryogenic tank systems, among others adhesive bonding is a promising technology for joining.

 

As an intern at Airbus CRT you will be a member of the materials team and participate in technical project meetings. This internship will be dedicated to the development of adhesive bonded joints under cryogenic conditions. The activities will be focused on developing a reliable bonding process, including surface treatment, use of suitable adhesive formulations and bonding procedures. Further characterize the joints concerning their mechanical performance and hydrogen permeation properties under cold and aged conditions.
